Whiteboards Don’t Belong in Landfills — Here’s What to Do Instead

Whiteboards Don’t Belong in Landfills — Here’s What to Do Instead

In several recent blog posts, we’ve been discussing how to restore a whiteboard. In this post, we’ll discuss how whiteboard restoration is a wise investment. We’ll also give basic guidelines on how to apply premium whiteboard paint on your old board. Doing so will give you an attractive, easy-to-use, highly durable writing surface that will serve you for ten-plus years.

1. Why Whiteboard Paint Is an Affordable, Durable and Long-term Alternative to Replacement

When you apply top-quality whiteboard paint to your old whiteboard, you get a new writing surface at a fraction of the cost of replacing a series of whiteboards. Because of its long duration and reasonable price per square foot of coverage, it’s also more cost-effective than other whiteboard paints on the market.

Standard melamine whiteboards usually need to be switched out often due to ghosting, staining, and scratching issues. The boards soon become dirty with everyday use, especially when they’re not well maintained. The marked, faded boards then get challenging to use. And what’s written on them becomes hard to make out, even from up close. That’s why users need to replace whiteboards every one to five years when they’re no longer functional, and this can be expensive.

By comparison, if it’s well used and maintained, a single coat of premium whiteboard paint will remain functional for ten or more years of continuous use. Use low-odor dry erase markers for writing, a microfiber cloth for erasing, and an eco-friendly whiteboard cleaner and microfiber cloths for cleaning. Doing so will ensure that your restored whiteboard will provide you with the best possible results.

2. Guide to Applying Whiteboard Paint for a Fresh Writable Surface

Due to its effortless, one-layer application method, premium whiteboard paint saves you a lot of time, energy, and money. All you need to do to get a perfect writing surface is follow the straightforward instructions included in every whiteboard paint kit. If you do so, you’ll have an easy time applying the paint and will get an attractive, blemish-free writing canvas for your school, business, or residence. As one happy user put it, “the coating went on as easy as pie.”

Since it’s an industrial-grade coating, restoring your whiteboard with premium whiteboard paint is different from applying traditional interior paints. It’s easy to install top-quality whiteboard paint. However, you’ll need to consider several factors before starting the process. Below are two points to remember.

A proper paint roller

Use a good-quality nine-inch microfiber roller roller sleeve with a 1/4″ or 3/8″ nap to best restore your whiteboard with premium whiteboard paint. Removing the lint from the sleeve by wrapping masking tape around it in a spiral pattern from top to bottom is a good idea. Then, after you’ve covered the whole sleeve, gently remove the tape to remove any surplus lint that could impact the sheen and functionality of your whiteboard painted surface after it dries.

Once you’ve finished removing the masking tape, the tape will have removed all the excess lint from the roller sleeve. You should complete this step before mixing parts A and B of the whiteboard paint. Also, avoid buying a foam roller sleeve or any other kind of synthetic roller cover.  Using them would cause you to apply the whiteboard paint too sparsely. This will result in an unsuitable finished surface after the paint cures.

One pass with your roller is sufficient

Steer clear of applying the paint with multiple passes as you would if you were applying regular interior house paint. Apply a single even layer of whiteboard paint to one part of your whiteboard. Then move directly to the adjacent part without going back to re-roll any of the paint on the first part.

Also, remember not to apply a coat that’s too thin. This will produce a substandard whiteboard with an uneven surface that’s hard to write on and erase. On the other hand, it’s also important to avoid applying the paint too heavily. Doing so will cause drip marks to appear after the paint cures. You can apply generous amounts of the paint. But if you do, don’t forget to immediately catch any drips or runs that might occur during the application process.

Trying to fix drips by rolling back over them after you finish applying the paint won’t work.  It will lead to a failed whiteboard surface, and then you’ll have issues with writing and erasing later. So, keep an eye out for runs and drips while applying the coating and remedy them just as they occur.

3. How Whiteboard Coatings Can Revive an Old Whiteboard or Transform Entire Walls

Having a whiteboard that’s been restored with high-quality whiteboard paint will revitalize your writing and drawing experience. The board’s bright, clean look will give you a new perspective on using a whiteboard. Moreover, the fact that your restored whiteboard is so easy to write on and erase will make your projects and activities more fun and effortless.

Psychological effects

The vibrant, inviting appearance of your restored whiteboard will inevitably stimulate a flow of creative ideas and images in your mind and those of other users. Compared to the dingy, smudged look of your old whiteboard, your revived board will make everyone more interested in expressing their creativity. In the classroom or home, for example, a renewed whiteboard surface can help get students more excited about doing their school work.  And in the office, the bright, revived whiteboard surface will draw people to it for brainstorming, project planning, and other activities.

Chances are, the last time you tried to use your old whiteboard you either didn’t feel too motivated or were not motivated at all. That’s because the board felt like just another fixture in the room, like a wall lamp or painting. When people have to write on a dirty whiteboard, in poor condition, or just doesn’t look attractive, they tend to feel uninspired. That can be quite a disadvantage, especially when you have a lot of work to do at school, in the office, or at home.

In contrast, your newly restored whiteboard can have a positive mental impact on you, other users, and the surrounding space, both functionally and aesthetically. A restored whiteboard will look so sleek, clean, and inviting that you’ll always feel motivated to use it for various tasks.

Interior design effects

Gray, dingy whiteboards typically present an interior design problem. For one thing, their dirtiness makes them visual eyesores. So, there’s nothing aesthetically pleasing about them, which can create problems. In a room with a heavy design or a more basic layout, an unattractive whiteboard makes the ambiance even more unappealing. And if your interior look is modern, upbeat, and sophisticated, an uninviting whiteboard is going to detract. If you have a clean white or pastel-colored room, the plain, dingy whiteboard just won’t add to the positive feeling.

On the other hand, a whiteboard restored with whiteboard paint will look stylish and elegant in any type of space.  And with so many customizable color options available with clear whiteboard paint, you’ll surely be able to find a look that’s a design asset. Just apply a base coat of any color paint you like. Then, put the clear version of premium whiteboard paint over the base paint to create the desired appearance and feel.

Expand the effect by transforming an entire wall

Instead of restoring your old whiteboard with premium whiteboard paint, you should consider transforming an entire wall into a vast writing canvas. Giving yourself, your team members, your students, or your family members this larger, easy-to-access, writable space will make life even more enjoyable and productive. Either way, you choose to go, whiteboard paint can be a real game changer for everyone in your circle. Expand your horizons with top-quality whiteboard paint soon, and enjoy a new way of communicating and working.
